Hand Therapy

A Hand therapist is a healthcare professional who specializes in treating conditions and injuries related to the hands and upper extremities. They are typically occupational therapists or physical therapists who have undergone additional training to specialize in hand therapy.

Hand therapists work with patients who have conditions such as fractures, tendon injuries, nerve compressions, arthritis, and other hand-related issues. Hand therapists customize treatment plans based on the specific needs of each patient. This may include exercises, therapeutic modalities, manual techniques, splinting, and functional training and return to work recommendations, working closely with patients to improve their hand function, reduce pain, increase range of motion, and enhance their ability to perform daily activities.

Hand therapist practitioners also educate patients on self-care techniques, injury prevention strategies, and provide recommendations for adaptive equipment or assistive devices when necessary. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as Hand surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons , rheumatologists and GP’s to ensure comprehensive care for their patients.
